3 Tips for Lip Care

Lips are a delicate part of your body. During summer, you need to be more careful with your lips as they become dry and in order to protect them against the sun. They require intensive care as they have thinnest skin layer as compared to other body parts.

The hot sun takes its toll on your skin which is why you have to take extra measures. Your lips don’t have sebaceous glands which are responsible keep your skin soft and moist. Thus, they are more prone to dry out.

Many a times, you might lick your lips to keep them moist; doing so actually leads to more dryness. So, what is the key to healthy lips?

There is nothing to worry about; here are some tips which can answer your question-

  1. Apply moisturizer
  2. SPF protection
  3. Exfoliate

1. Apply moisturizer- In summer, your lips are exposed to excess heat, UV rays and moisture- sucking air conditioners. This exposure makes your lips dry and chapped. Apply moisturizer to keep your lips hydrated. Lemon can also be of use, it helps in reducing darkness and pigmentation. Apply 1 tbsp of lemon juice in 3-4 drops of coconut oil on your lips keep it overnight. Follow this everyday and you will see the change.

2. SPF protection- Sun protection is not only required for your face, neck or arms but also lips. This summer, before buying a lip balm make sure it contains a sun protection element or SPF. SPF protects lips from drying up and darkening. Lips lack melanin; this makes them vulnerable to solar damage from UV exposure. Buy a lip product with at least SPF 15.

3. Exfoliate- Just like your face, you also need to remove dead cells from your lips. Exfoliating can help in getting rid of dryness, flaky skin on your lips and helps in restoring softness, smoothness and make your lips look shiny. Use a lip scrub once a week to exfoliate them. You can also make a lip scrub at home. Take 1 tbsp of honey, sugar and olive oil, mix them well for a thick consistency. Rub the mixture onto your lips slowly. Wash it off with lukewarm water and immediately apply a lip balm thereafter to keep them moist.
